Out and about
Situated at the heart of the South coast, Southampton is the ideal base in which to explore the surrounding towns and coastline. With a mix of old and new, you can walk the medieval town walls that still surround the city or shop till you drop at the West Quay shopping complex with over 100 stores.
For a cultural break, discover nearby Winchester. An unspoilt cathedral city on the edge of the South Downs, Winchester is England's ancient capital and former seat of King Alfred the Great. Discover world famous historic ships - HMS Victory, the Mary Rose ad HMS Warrior 1860 at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard or the unique collection of the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu.
Make a weekend of it and head off to explore the New Forest National Park. As the largest remaining area of lowland heath in Europe, it is one of the last places in the South East England to offer a sense of wildness and tranquility. Alternatively, take a short hop to the Isle of Wight and discover why Osborne House was a favourite retreat for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
